On the occasion of Art Blocks' third anniversary, we had the chance to catch up with Founder and CEO, Erick Calderon (aka Snowfro), to ask a few questions. From pivotal moments to superhero aspirations, below are a few behind-the-scenes stories that shaped Art Blocks into the generative art platform it is today.
Q: If you could go back in time to the day you launched, what advice would you give yourself?
A: Don’t launch? Lol, just kidding. Take things one step at a time, don’t dwell too much on things you can’t control, and, above all, make sure you’re having fun.
Q: Who were the first people you told about your idea for Art Blocks? How did they respond?
A: Pete Molick (pixelpete), Daniel Calderon Arenas (DCA), Matthew Wettergreen, and my wife Mara. This was 2017, and NFTs, in general, were a totally new concept. It was mostly met with confusion to start, which led to curiosity, which led to a small focus group of folks that consistently encouraged me to push forward and figure it out.
Q: Looking back at the past three years, what were three pivotal moments essential to Art Blocks' journey?
A: Realizing people cared about my crazy idea, both artists and collectors alike…Realizing Art Blocks would grow well beyond my expectations…And when artists and collectors shared sentimental notes about how Art Blocks changed their lives dramatically.
Q: If Art Blocks was a superhero, what would its superpowers be and why?
A: Compassion—every step we have taken has been based on putting ourselves into the shoes of collectors and artists, thinking about how we can best navigate the unknowns of this growing medium and web3 in general, in a way that elevates everyone to the extent that we could.
Q: Of all the amazing events you've attended for Art Blocks in the last three years, which are in your top three?
A: Marfa 2021, Marfa 2022, Marfa 2023 🙂
Q: If the story of Art Blocks was made into a movie, who would play you?
A: Seth Rogen because Chris Farley is no longer with us.
Q: What aspects of building Art Blocks have been the most fun since launch?
A: Watching sneakerheads and gamers become art appreciators and critics…Meeting these individuals after knowing them as pfps for extended periods…Growing the team and working with a brilliant group excited about the future of the generative medium...And seeing artists thrive in this new paradigm for digital art.
Q: If the last three years of Art Blocks had a theme song, what would it be?
A: Somewhere between “Loud Places” by Jamie xx and “Good Riddance” by Green Day.
