Over 600 people made the journey to the Third Annual Art Blocks Marfa Weekend, which took place from September 21 to 24, 2023. Attendees from all parts of the world traveled to the West Texas desert to celebrate both community and art. More than 25 events and activations were spread across 10 different locations, highlighting several artists on our platform and the surrounding Marfa community. Here’s a sample of what we experienced:
Thursday
One of the early highlights of the weekend was seeing marfaMESH come to life. This was a newly released Art Blocks Explorations project where attendees were given a lanyard upon check-in, which held a unique marfaMESH NFC card powered by IYK. From there, you could meet and interact with other guests using the marfaMESH app and tap the back of your mobile device to the NFC cards, capturing data and altering the artwork. The anonymous data included geolocation zones, scene composition, and color values from photos taken within the app.
Friday
On Friday, we enjoyed the opening of Collēctīvus: Computation, Consciousness, and Collective Memory at the Art Blocks Gallery. This exhibition helped unfold the power of collective curation. These seven projects, selected from a range of artworks released on the Art Blocks platform over the past year, used computation as a medium to explore ideas of the collective unconscious, the personal and universal concept of memory, and the interplay of natural and digital forms.
The exhibition included The Field by Beervangeer, Sandaliya by Melissa Wiederrecht, Speak To Me by Lisa Orth, Cargo by Kim Asendorf, Calian by Eric De Giuli, Memories of Digital Data by Kazuhiro Tanimoto, and Cerebellum by Laya Mathikshara and Santiago.
Artist activations at Saint George Hall provided a space for attendees to interact and explore the various ways we could all enjoy and celebrate generative work. Setups ranged from AR/VR and laser engraving to digital painting, embroidery work, vending machines, and everything in between!
A backyard panel discussion about marfaMESH was moderated by Decrypt’s Sander Lutz. The speakers included Ryan Ouyang of IYK, as well as Harvey Rayner and Shane Richardson of marfaMESH.
A panel discussion surrounding our latest exhibition, Collēctīvus: On Collective Curation, featured Beervangeer and Han from DECA. The discussion was moderated by Mad Pinney.
Still Moving in Marfa by Nathaniel Stern and Sasha Stiles was a live performance at Crowley Theater that included a full-body, interactive, AI-powered poem. It highlighted what it meant to be a human body facing a machine and the daily dance between the analog and the virtual.
Dopamine Machines by Steve Pikelny was on display as an audio-visual experience that featured six projectors spread across the Crowley Theater.
Saturday
Saturday kicked off with a morning meditation and interactive ritual held in the backyard of the Art Blocks Gallery. The Authentic Imagination (AI) Ritual was organized by Julie de Ruijter (Studio Poca) and Beervangeer.
Building with Conviction to Breakthrough included some of the highest conviction builders in the web3 space. They discussed the ups and downs they experienced during the bear and bull markets. The panel included Art Blocks' Erick Calderon, Monaverse's Justin Melillo, and Transient Labs' Chris Ostoich. The discussion was moderated by Consensys Mesh's Shawn Cheng.
The Art Blocks Trivia Showdown was hosted by Alex from Generative Artworks, Grant (artbot, artbot), and Pompeyplottin. It was an exhilarating afternoon of brain-teasing fun and included exciting prizes such as Friendship Bracelets, Artacle Pro subscriptions, Infinite Objects displays, and iDraw pen plotters provided by UUNA TEK. Congratulations to all the lucky winners!
Our Saturday BBQ is an annual staple of the Art Blocks Marfa Weekend. This gathering provided a dedicated time for our community of artists and collectors to come together and enjoy food and drinks under the West Texas sun.
We’re already counting down the days until we all meet again in 2024!
